A bowl of bunnies...

This past weekend, Dave & I celebrated our 29th Anniversary
with a trip northward to our property in Winter.

On our way, we had to follow the signs -- "Thrift Sale" beckoned!
At one stop, there were boxes at the road edge, unpriced.
I picked the white rabbit above out of a box - held it up for a price -- "free".
I knew the rabbit was German made.

The sale was outside - and then continued into the house.
A grandmother's estate...lots of dishes, grandson still unpacking.
We looked around, asking permission to move from room to room.
And there, on the top of a VERY full waste basket was the brown rabbit above.
Definitely a German candy container
(head comes off, candy would have gone inside).

Was the brown rabbit for the taking too? "Sure, just trash."

So -- they arrived home, marking our anniversary -- a mere 29 years
compared to their age of likely 100+ years.
Yes -- these sweet rabbits were special -- and I happen to collect them.
I admit to paying well over "free" for the others in my collection.
And here they were, one in a free box, one in the trash.
Waiting, waiting - just for me.

"Value" --it is in the eye of the beholder.

Bunnies in a bowl -- priceless to me.

What is your favorite free find??

To give you an idea of size...the bowl the bunnies are in is a wash stand bowl. That bowl is another treasure from this summer --- love, love, love it!!

I love the rabbits and the story of how you got them. I've been thinking hard about my favorite "free find", I know I've scored some, but all I can think of off the top of my head are the incredible things I have received as gifts, passed to me from family and friends because they knew how much those types of things mean to me. The rabbits are fortunate that you were there to save them. It fascinates me what some people are willing to "toss". Yikes!

Hi,

I found your blog while at the school house antiques (I picked up your card). I hope to make it to your sale in November but I wanted to ask you about the traffic flow at school house? I was just in asking about booth space and may take a spot for the fun of it. I already have one in portage but it is a bit of a drive.

Hi Lisa:
Welcome!
So -- traffic at the school house? Hmmm - well, in all honesty, as of late my sales have been down. I still make at least double my rent (which is my goal) --- but had been spoiled with sales on average of multiple times my rent in the past. Seems like sales are just kind of trickling in -- and I just can't count on them for budgeting. Wish I was more hopeful on this -- but not certain. I let go of a booth this summer to lower my fixed expenses.

We work a couple days a month -- and find that traffic is steady -- but could be way better given the location. The dealers that make more have items all over the mall -- so their rent to sales ratio would be very high. Just not sure what to say.

Well thanks for the input. this is something I've always wanted to do and I currently have a booth in Portage but it is a 3 hr drive. I do have a small upstairs booth at cobblestone antiques but whenever I've been around there has been very few people. I do know I can get a better size space at school house for the same amount of money actually - $4 cheaper. I really just want it to pay the rent fee. I'm doing it for fun. so if it made above that it would be great but not totally necessary.
thanks
Lisa
