Marmie & me

At the end of many days I could be found sitting on the stoop of the barn door,
an orange kitty in my lap - purring, ever purring.
I would say to him, "no one in the world knows we are here except Marmie & me."
And we would sit.
All my woes would be gone.
The day's concerns would evaporate in that moment.
It would be just Marmalade and me.
Two old souls, connected.
A would be farmer and a barn cat.

Tonight I sit alone,
my Marmie buried behind the barn...
ever near the barn he loved so much,
the family he cared so deeply for,
the stoop we came to know.

I will miss those moments when it was
just Marmie & me...
for he was not just a barn cat, he was my barn cat.

May his memory be for a blessing.

Marmalade was the resident tom cat -- and thus protected his farm. He had gotten sick earlier this summer -- and never fully recovered. This past week I made the decision to have him put to sleep -- he purred right up until the end, with me at his side telling him stories of the barn.
I miss him already.
Tears for a barn cat...

They are our peace at the end of a worried day, our greeters when we need them most, our alarm clocks if we miss feeding time. They are my furry children and I worry about them if they aren't home....I have tears with you this morning.

I am beyond words.

Their little lives are appreciated, and photographed, and reflected on by you, to us; it's their source of immortality.

Is Summer doing ok?

Thank you KimmyKats -- your immediate support means a lot...you understand this connection. Your words really touched me.

And Cheryl -- sweet Cheryl...thanks for checking in. I actually surrendered Winter & Spring (who also were sick again) to a vet from the Trempealeau County Humane Society last night --an angel named Suzie who will care for them with the medical attention they need. Summer is still here -- but crying for his siblings in the barn. Ian is home today and he may adopt him. They both need a companion -- my little lost kitten in the barn -- and my son in his first apartment alone. I wasn't sure of a kitten in a small space, but now think it might be just what they both need.

In my 20's I had a small apartment and an adopted farm cat, Jesse. I suggest a little cat harness so Ian can take Summer for walks, Jesse used to love that. But beware, farm cats are very clever, it's required of them. Once they get all cozy in an apartment they figure out how to get into cupboards, open the food bag, and feed themselves. Once Jesse even got the frig open (she was only about 8 pounds!) and pulled a roast onto the floor. It will keep Ian on his toes, but it is an endless source of entertainment.
