Autumn Barn Sale - count down begins

Work began with haste in the hayloft on Saturday. Heavy furniture moved, now time to un-tarp and open tub after tub of vintage finds.

For all the details click on "Barn Sale..." under Chapters in the right column.

Check back for sneak peaks of the Barn Sale in the weeks ahead.

Dumpster Diva Sale

Where is the place to be this Friday, August 31?

Why the Dumpster Diva Sale in Madison, Wisconsin --of course!

Join Nan & Sarah from 8-2 for the 6th annual sale. Set your GPS for 625 Constitution Lane, and be ready for some fabulous finds. Word has it that this sale coincides with a neighborhood garage sale! And just so you know, these Divas do vintage finds right!

The picture is from my farm, but highlights a sweet tarnished creamer in front gifted from Sarah......they have fabulous taste! Oh....and if you have attended a Barn Sale....you might recognize Nan & Sarah!

Farmhouse Style - autumn

I have not totally "retired" from blogging....will still post antique booth & Barn Sale updates.

Autumn has begun to arrive at my booth at the Hixton Schoolhouse Antique Mall in Wisconsin...even redid the front door display with a bit of autumn Farmhouse Style (3rd picture). I love the pop of orange at this time of year.

October Barn Sale is now less than 2 months away....we did a major gathering Friday -- MAJOR!

And, we have a new litter of kittens..my heart is happy.

p.s. had some questions about leaving comments on these antique booth or Barn Sale posts. I will not have an open comment area....email me with any questions.

my swan song....

At the close of each day I kick off my shoes & sit. My chair of choice lately is set just outside the barn...my work day is over, my chores done...I just sit. Sometimes the pure peace of the moment overwhelms me. This is my favorite time, this private time.

For those that know me, I would guess they might describe me as independent, pretty opinionated, and yet quite private. I believe that is why it was kismet for this farm to find me just when I needed it the most. I needed this peace in my life....this place I could run back to for safety from a world that I sometimes just don't quite understand.

Please know that it has been both my joy & pleasure to share this story of my farm on this blog...it became a bit of a personal scrapbook for me. And I truly thank the many sweet friends that have stopped by here every now & again. You have meant a lot to me in this story.

Today marks my swan song in the world of blogging--I will certainly come back and share a post every now & again but only when I feel I might have something important to say. This will still be the place to visit for updates on my October Barn Sale or my antique booth at Hixton.

But for now, I feel the wind on my face, the grass under my bare feet and the sun at my back. The time for a sweet "so long" is here....and one final picture of my Meadowview Farm, before it again becomes mine, all mine.

farm

There are still moments of disbelief....when we remember that just a little over 6 years ago, if asked, owning a farm would not even have been a twinkle in our eye. I pictured then, a retired Kari finally sitting on the spindled porch of the home we owned in Sun Prairie. I measured hard work in a different way-based on a city yard. Quiet was different-as was privacy. I was a city folk - and had been so all my life. Not a big city girl, but definitely a city girl.

And now we live on this farm, tending much yard, outbuildings, a small flock of animals...and slowing down, while at the same time filling days until they overflow. Joy is found in different ways, a neighbor's "hi" is now a hand raised on a passing tractor, and work is measured with a yardstick not a ruler.

If asked, I am unequivocally rural and most definitely a country girl. While my first choice on the radio will always be WPR, my second will be country. I now know the feel of barn wood and the love of new kittens born on my farm and the call of goats in my pasture. It has become the song of my very soul, taking me almost 50 years to find. I am home....and home is a farm, my farm.

ode to a jar

I have this wonderful affection for vintage canning jars....blue Ball brand jars are my favorite. I think that I could design an entire room around these jars and their charming color.

Today we came upon a box of jars at a thrift sale....they are washed, air dried and then will await their next job. Perhaps they will hold pecans like those in my jelly cupboard. Perhaps they will hold cat food for barn cats that visit the porch. Perhaps they will just line a windowsill so the light can reflect through just so.

Vintage canning jars ~ definitely on my top ten list.

a spot to call his own

The fact is, we live in the country...no wireless Internet....still a dial-up connection. The fact is, we live in a brick house...a double brick to be exact. The house was bricked, then re-bricked over that as part of the construction in 1857. Walls are thick.....so thick that we are fortunate to even have two phone lines entering the house----one in the kitchen and one in the den for the satellite dish. So...in the end, we need a place in the kitchen to house our computer. I just recently redid this area by marrying a cast off table with a set of drawers. Now our kitchen holds a little work area - and our little laptop has a spot to call his own.

charm

So often when I share what I collect or what I sell....I try to explain that these vintage finds pull at my heart strings....they are sweet, charming, precious. I collect & sell charm...wrapped up in Farmhouse Style. I deal in investments of the heart...just do. Nothing fancy or pretentious-just sweet little memories, pieces from the past. That's the best I can do to describe what makes my heart purr.... Charm it is!

seriously

Right now I should be laughing, heading down the highway with my friends at my side....perhaps with Rockford in our GPS, gathering the last of our scavenger hunt pictures to share over supper...I am certain I would already have the "why ever would they make this" item in my picture roll. We would have a Uhaul full of vintage finds & I would have one more overnight ahead in Madison (compliments of the Marriott Hotel, and far too many travel nights from a past job). I would be tired and happy!

But, what started as a grand adventure....turned into a bumpy round-about. See, the trip would begin with a day of antiquing on my own in Eastern Wisconsin. I had packed, made all my away lists and picked up the rental trailer....a wonderful offer from the rental outlet to upgrade the size at no extra cost-and though I did ask if my little Sportage could handle this larger size....in my mind I just thought more room, more stuff.

Up early Friday...my kind of vacation day ahead...antiques to find, a well planned itinerary ahead. All was fine in the first two hours of my trip, it was the last hour that found me bumping up & down, pulled over to check tires, figured it must have just been the road. Ventured on to the Fox River Antique Mall in Appleton.....bought a tall corner cupboard & table, was going to get some use from this trailer. Left from there to the Memories Mall in Little Chute....and the troubles with the trailer escalated to what felt like a roller coaster ride followed by a rope pulling contest between the car & the trailer....after far too long of this, I made a panicked call to Dave....Uhaul road assistance would be called, I needed to get off Highway 41 to await them. Dang it all, if I was going to wait, it would be at another Antique Mall just down the highway in Oshkosh.....I traveled through Friday traffic crawling....or shall I say bumping along, folks honked with support (waved their fingers too). I won't even attempt to paint a picture of me getting over a lane then off the highway and around a round about during traffic mixed with 70,000 eager fans heading up state to the first Packer scrimmage....WAS NOT pretty!

The day ended with me sitting in a semi repair shop at 7:00 p.m. while the trailer & car were looked at....picture a little red SUV & trailer and me surrounded by semi trailers and their drivers. Honestly, if I could have unhitched the trailer and left it behind...would have, but it was now holding a 7 foot corner cupboard.

The trailer doctors determined that there were multiple factors leading to the bouncy ride, but it would be safe to travel it slowly homeward....arriving home at 11:30 last night. Today the trailer was "decommissioned"....heading to the Uhaul retirement pastures.

What began as an excitingly full weekend - including a day with my "barn cat" friends....ended up as discouragingly disappointing. Seriously, the good times don't always roll & life happens. In the scheme of Perspective, was nothing....in the scheme of a weekend I had anticipated, was just too bad.

and August arrives

Officially on their own....that is the word for flowers that weather this drought, kittens now graduated (at 3 months) from their mom, goats learning to pasture this summer in a bewildered heat-o-rama.....officially on their own.

Big sister barn cat, Chestnut, attempts to soften the "orphaning" process with wild treats caught in the fields....she hurries to the barn with a mouse or bird and gifts it to the babies. I try to help the plants along with evening drinks of water. The goats slim down to a healthy weight (oh wish I could do so too) with the work of foraging...yet I gift them with tree cuttings in the early evening. And I feel ever so glad that we invested in air conditioning this of all summers.

August arrives and finds us all moving a bit slower. Tonight we are sitting in the potting shed, a former chicken coop....taking refuge from those pesky flies. With kittens playing, a slight breeze blowing, crickets singing, and warmth cocooning us....we welcome August.
